My Garden is “Open” — Tall Grass and All
Today, from 2:00 to 5:00, my garden will be open to the public — part of the Cornucopia Network of New Jersey’s Spring Open Garden Tours. My raised beds are in good shape; many seedlings are visible to the naked eye (without folding one’s body completely in half and pressing one’s nose to the soil); the paths between the beds are lined with bark chips (no muddy shoes here); and the slugs and snails are out in full force (munching a breakfast of sorrel and playing around on the phlox stems). I’m ready to talk to anyone who asks about square-foot gardening (why the grids on your raised beds?), organic gardening (so, you’re not going to spray those slugs with anything at all?), and — of course — co-creative soil gardening (exactly how do you “talk” to nature?). For those interested in learning more than I can offer in a few minutes’ time, I’ll have a pile of Machaelle Small Wright’s books available for perusal, business cards with my info and with my friend/co-creative consultant Balsam’s info, and the new square-foot gardening book. It’s raining and misty now, and I doubt I’ll get the backyard mowed before 2:00, so my open garden tourists will probably get to experience my co-creatively over-grown grass as well as the rest of my garden. I’m looking forward to a fun and interesting afternoon, calf-high grass and all!
